Out With The Old, In With The New

As we draw closer to the end of the year, many people start to consider resolutions for the New Year. It’s a time of both recollection as well as making plans. Finishing up and starting over.

Excitement looms as the start of something new peeks just over the horizon. The previous year may have been a great one, or a bad one, but odds are we’re all still looking for something “better”.

Old Ideas

I wrote a blog post a couple of years ago for my own blog, Scribbles & Sustenance, entitled “My #1 Resolution” that talks about devoting time to God that’s normally spent on other things. Imagine the difference if we gave the Bible the attention it deserves!

I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past year. There are things I MEANT to do, but didn’t, and there are things that I did (and said), that I never meant to do or say.

Isn’t that how it goes?

The good news is, for all that we do that we aren’t happy with, there’s at least another day to change it! Just opening your eyes in the morning is proof that God is giving you another chance to walk in His ways and get right square in the center of His will!

On the other hand, if you have things in your life that you aren’t particularly happy about, you have every opportunity to turn that into a testimony. And testimonies are powerful things! Why, it’s one thing we use to overcome the enemy!

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.”

Revelation 12:11

Did you know it can even be prophetic?

“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

-Revelation 19:10

New Plans

New Year’s resolutions are the plans that are suppose to shape our walking into something brand new. They’re suppose to make things better, healthier, easier to maneuver, and so forth. They’re a great idea! Studies have even shown that creating and actually writing down goals can greatly improve your chances of success in a new venture.

Lord knows I’ve made my share of resolutions! Very few have actually ever come to fruition, if I’m being honest. I never lost the weight, I never got organized, I never did all the things that would make me a better wife, mom, sister, daughter, friend… and still, here I am.

Resolutions are one thing, but investing in the Word of God is quite another. I have found that everything I have asked Jesus to help me accomplish, I have! And if I haven’t yet, then I’m on my way. I even have the Word of God to offer gentle reminds, as often as I need them.

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

Proverbs 16:9

We can make all the plans we want, really, but it is God that gets us where we really need to be. Often times, he gives us dreams and desires that push us forward in our calling for the Kingdom. Other times, we can let flesh take over and lead us into places we were never meant to be.

The secret to knowing the difference is to be led by the Spirit. Reading the Word and staying constant in prayer can help keep our sensors activated when it comes to Godliness. Not everything we want to do is the right thing, and not every desire we have lines up with God’s will for our lives. Truth is, it can be hard knowing, sometimes, whether we’re even on the right track!

But, the closer we are to God’s heart, the closer we are for where He wants us to be in life.

“Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.”

-Deuteronomy 5:33

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

-Psalm 1:1

I pray, as this New Year makes its way closer that you are able to leave some of the “old” behind, and at the same time, grab hold of all the “new” that God has in store for you!

Let’s make 2019 a year to be remembered!

    • Amen Tammy, I couldn’t agree more with that last statement! ❤ I'm so honored to be able to visit here, and share what the Lord pours into my heart. It may only be for "ONE" person, but He will get them to it when the time comes, glory to His Name!
