Praying For a Thankful Heart Despite Your Pain

Sweet friend, the truth is, sometimes life hurts.

The pangs of our emotional wounds can run as deep as the ocean.  We nurse our battle scars and hope, pray for healing.

We may even pray that we forget altogether what happened to us.

In time, our wounds begin to heal.  We may begin to experience a myriad of cheerful days where the remnants of obscure memories never seem to cross our minds.

Praying For a Thankful Heart Despite Your Pain

Then there are days when you are flooded with memories and emotions bringing all of the pain right back to the forefront of your mind.  You may begin to reason with yourself.  Telling yourself that today, you are safe.  Today, you not afraid and that you are a child of the Almighty.

…but it’s too late. Your system has been overwhelmed by emotions that accompanied your trauma.

In your despair, you find yourself wanting to fall to your knees in prayer, to beg for mercy and relief from your agony.  However, once on your knees all you can muster are floods of tears.

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.  And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. “ -Romans 8:26-27

Other times, you simply feel too numb to pray.  You find yourself immersed in a strange stagnant kind of agony.  One that you feel only you and God understands.

…and He does!

Finding Hope In Thankfulness

There is a very tangible reason why we are to pray in gratitude.  It helps us to shift our focus from the hurts that we have endured.

It enables us to perceive our circumstances through a different lens, rose-colored glasses if you will.

We begin to see just how abundantly blessed we are.

God is working SO many miracles in our lives each and every day.  He doesn’t want us to stay stuck in our despair when there are a million small blessings surrounding us daily.

Take a look outside your bedroom window.  Can you a beautiful tree in the distance?  The sun rising in the morning and the birds singing a brand new song?

Look at your beautiful children, savor their infectious laughter and their precious smiles.

The list of blessings is endless, you only need to notice.

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” -Colossians 3:15-17

Praying For A Thankful Heart

Therefore, when old wounds begin to fester and you begin to feel as though you are suffocating in the fog of lingering pain.

Pray.

Now, I understand that there are times when you feel so weakened by disappointments, grief, betrayals, and loss of trust.

Times when you simply can’t find the words to pray.

In those moments, know that the Holy Spirit intercedes on your behalf.  The Creator of all things loves you …You are His and He fights for YOU!

“for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” -Deuteronomy 20:4

…and then, pray!

Pray out loud for a heart of gladness and gratitude.  Allow those feelings to wash over you as you fervently pray.

Take a moment and just allow this scripture to soak into your soul:

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

Serve the Lord with gladness!

Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God!

It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

And his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good;

His steadfast love endures forever,

And his faithfulness to all generations.” -Psalm 100:1-5

Glory to God!  We can come before Him in gladness and singing.  Giving Him praise for ALL that He has, and continues to do for us.

Do this and greet your day with the victory that our Father promises us!

Blessings to you
