Consider what Jesus said to his disciple Peter in Matthew chapter 6. If you let it to the core of your heart, it has a powerful message for all of us. I invite you to read:
Matthew 16 KJV
23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me Satan: thou art and offense unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Life application Questions:
v.23 This seems like harsh language for Jesus to use on his disciple, but how would WE measure up? Do we “savour” things of God or things of man? What story does our daily life tell? Our thought life? Our hobbies? Our relationship with people? Is there an area of our life that we do not let God’s Word lead??
v.24 Is there any area of your life that you do not put God first? Some area where you do not let God lead? Are you ignoring what His word says about something in-particular because you do not want to change, do not want to pick up your sacrificial cross and carry it for Christ?
v.25 Are you sacrificing anything, any flesh for Christ? By this I mean are there fleshly fruits that you surrender (cast aside, leave, let go of) to let fruits of the spirit be nurtured?
v. 26 Who or what is more important to you than your relationship with God? Do you give precedence to this person, or this person’s opinion or desires over your Lord and Father’s opinions and desires?
v. 27 So Christ offers righteousness in His blood, but…. WORKS will be judged and we will be rewarded accordingly. Are you producing works that honor God and His word, and declare loyalty to the one true God?
v.28 Is there something you would like to change or do as an offering to our Lord, before you taste death?
Dear God, in Christ Jesus I pray. I want to have a tender heart. I want to have a willing and hungry heart. I want to be hungry for what pleases God. Please send, unleash, grow the Holy Spirit inside of me. Open my eyes. I offer my heart. I offer my mind. I offer my life. Let me not ignore one whisper in my soul from YOU.
Please forgive me for when I fail you. In Jesus’s name I pray, AMEN
